With over three decades of experience in the motor trade, Natalie Smith brings a wealth of industry knowledge — and a genuine passion for people — to her role as Office Manager at Birch.

Having spent her career with brands such as DAF Trucks and Volvo, Natalie has worked across sales administration, service planning and client liaison, combining meticulous organisation with a calm, approachable presence.

Today, she’s one of the first faces clients see when they visit Birch’s Gatwick HQ, overseeing reception, customer contact and the smooth running of the office. Her role blends professionalism with hospitality, ensuring that every visit to Birch feels as polished as the cars it protects.

What first drew you to Birch, and what do you enjoy most about being part of the team?

I’ve always worked in the motor trade — more than 30 years now — and I still enjoy it as much as ever. What drew me to Birch was how new and exciting it was. It’s unlike anything I’ve seen before, and it’s full of genuinely nice people who care deeply about what they do.

It’s a pleasure to come into work every day and see how far we’ve come as a team.

Describe your role at Birch — what does a typical day look like for you?

No two days are ever the same! I manage the reception area, handle invoicing and accounts, coordinate customer bookings and keep the office running smoothly.

I’m also the person greeting clients when they arrive — and I think that first impression really matters. From keeping the coffee machine running to making sure the space looks immaculate, I like everything to feel calm, welcoming and organised.

Birch is known for precision and care. How do you personally define attention to detail?

For me, it’s about pride — whether that’s keeping reception spotless, making sure the diary is up to date, or knowing exactly who’s due in. Every little detail contributes to the overall standard.

I’m naturally organised, which helps. But being surrounded by people who share the same mindset makes it even easier. Everyone at Birch takes ownership of what they do, and that creates a brilliant working rhythm.

What’s one piece of advice you’d give to someone considering Birch for vehicle storage?

Come and see us for yourself!

I’ve worked in the motor trade a long time, and I’ve never seen a facility like Birch. From the outside, you’d never imagine what’s inside — the space, the design, the care. It’s genuinely impressive. And once you’ve met the team, you’ll understand straight away why our clients trust us.

Outside of work, what fuels your passion — motorsport, restoration, travel, or something unexpected?

Family comes first — I’ve got two grown-up sons and grandchildren, so most of my time outside work revolves around them.

I’m also trying to get fitter and take advantage of the countryside around here. Living near Birch means I’ve got some lovely walks on my doorstep, and I’m making a real effort this year to get out more.

Birch has a strong link with racing through Tom Chilton. How does that motorsport connection influence the team?

Tom brings great energy into the office. He’s always smiling, always upbeat — and he’s genuinely interested in everyone. You can feel that racing mentality come through in the team. There’s a sense of drive and positivity that’s infectious.

Even if I don’t always understand what he’s talking about — camber angles and all that! — it’s great having that motorsport buzz around the place.

What’s the most rewarding part of seeing a client’s car arrive — or leave — Birch’s facility?

It’s definitely the people. I enjoy chatting with clients when they drop cars off or come to collect them — they’re often fascinating people with amazing stories.

It’s satisfying knowing that we’re part of something special: helping look after vehicles that mean so much to their owners.

Choose ten cars you’d love to have stored at Birch.

Oh, that’s tricky! I’d start with an Aston Martin DBS — it’s just beautiful, elegant and powerful. I’d also have a Porsche Cayenne for practicality (the grandchildren would approve!) and a Volvo XC40, because I’m so used to driving Volvos and they’ve always been reliable.

Beyond that, I’ll stick to my favourites — anything comfortable, automatic and stylish.

Which of these would you take out for an autumn weekend?

Definitely the Aston Martin DBS. I’d rope one of my sons into driving it so I could just sit back and enjoy the view!

Finally, describe Birch in three words — and tell us why you chose them.

Exciting. Prestigious. Exceptional.

It’s exciting to be part of something that’s growing so fast, prestigious because of the level of care we provide, and exceptional because of the people — both the team and the clients.
